Very dark damselfly with light markings on the back of the head, lighter markings on the body. The ♀ has white or green shoulder lines but the markings on the rear section are blue. The ♂ hardly has shoulder lines and the centre of the rear section is uniformly dark. The rear markings are blue-green and the extrusions (cerci) are relatively long. ⇔ l. 31-35 mm syn. Dark bluet LA: ≈ The dark variety of the COENAGRION PULCHELLUM (Variable damselfly) is very similar though the ♂ lacks the large cerci.
