The top surface is distinctive; red with a pale blue eye on each wing, on the front wing yellow white black markings, rear wing more greyish. The underside is black with indistinct grey stripes. A common butterfly often is seen on nettle and hop host plants. ⇔ wsp. 50-55 mm syn. AGLAIS IO
