Both genders are very different. ♂ blacktop surface with white markings, sometimes with a blue glow, under surface similar but with an orange glow. ♀top surface front wing orange with black and white markings on the tips, very variable. Under surface brown white black markings. The wing edge resembles lace from both sides. ⇔ wsp. 70-80 mm syn. Mimic, Diadem LA: ≈ ♀ often confused with the DANAUS CHRYSIPPUS (Plain tiger) and DANAUS PLEXIPPUS (Monarch butterfly). ≈ ♂ HYPOLIMNAS BOLINA (Great Eggfly).
