Upper surface brown with white, sometimes orange markings. The ♂ has a blue glow at a certain angle. At the wing edges, there are eye markings. The under surface is brown with white and black markings. 

It prefers shady forest edges and the poplar tree is its favourite host.

⇔ wsp. 50-60 mm

The orange coloured upper surface indicates a subspecies, APATURA ILIA CLYTIE, more often found in warmer climates.

≈ The APATURA IRIS (Purple emperor) is just a little larger but has a faint ring on its rear wing instead of an eye and a more colourful under surface.
