Distinctive duck with a short bill, the ♂ is very colourful with a long tuft, orange-red whiskers, green forehead marking, red beak and a white belly and eye line. It can lift its gold coloured back feathers for display. The ♀ is brown-grey with white markings on breast and flanks and a white line near the eye and grey beak. She has petrol coloured speculum feathers. Prefers perching in trees and nests in tree burrows. Searches for seeds, nuts, bugs and snails. ⇔ l. 40-50 cm syn. Mandarin duck Originally from East Asia but for centuries have been kept as ornamental birds. Escaped individuals have formed small populations in western Europe. LA: ≈ The ♂ AIX SPONSA (Wood duck) has a black back and brown breast.
