Small white egret with a short sturdy neck, yellow beak and dark legs. While breeding, breast, head and neck become orange-yellow, the beak and legs become pinkish orange. Young has darker beaks and legs. Feeds among cattle on insects that are disturbed when trampled on by cattle, they also take insects, like ticks directly off the cattle. Breeds in colonies and outside breeding they roost in trees in large groups. ⇔ l. 46-55 cm A migratory bird living on all continents, large numbers in south Europe and recently also in central Europe. LA: ≈ The EGRETTA GARZETTA (Little egret) is similar but it has yellow toes and is taller.
