Very large bird with a pinkish brown back with black lines, grey head and a white grey belly. The grey neck and back become orange-red for the ♂ while courting. The whiskers are always visible. The wing leading edge is red-brown followed by a white band and black hind edge, the under surface is white. Shy birds living in groups of the same sex. While courting the ♂ shows an abundance of white down by elevating tail, wings and throat. The ♀ take care of the young. ⇔ l. 75-105 cm A migratory bird, rare with small scattered populations. LA: ≈ The TETRAX TETRAX (Little bustard) is much smaller, has more white on its wings and a smaller tail.
