A darter with brown-green eyes and a black "moustache", black yellow striped legs and a brown breast with lighter shoulder stripes. The ♂ has a red rear end, a bit club-shaped, the ♀ is yellow brownish with some black lines on its rear. The "moustache" is a thin black line over its nose and along the eyes and is distinctive for this species. ⇔ l. 35-40 mm LA: The genus SYMPETRUM (Darters) are very similar and certain characteristics can be found in several species but the combination is specific. ≈ The SYMPETRUM SANGUINEUM (Ruddy darter) has completely black legs. ≈ And the SYMPETRUM STRIOLATUM (Common Darter) has a straight-sided rear end and the "moustache" does not extend alongside the eyes. ≈ The SYMPETRUM MERIDIONALE (Southern Darter) looks paler without black spots.
