Red beetle, with black legs and head. The ♀ with a red neck shield and antennae that are approximately half the body length. The ♂ has a black neck shield, is lighter in colour and the antennae are almost its body length. The ♂ is often spotted during daytime on flowers, the ♀ more on fallen wood or below the bark. Lives up to the timberline. Larvae live in rotting wood. ⇔ l. ♀ 12-18 mm, ♂ 8-10 mm syn. AREDOLPONA RUBRA, LEPTURA RUBRA LA: ≈ The RHAGONYCHA FULVA (Red soldier beetle) is as small as ♂ but has a red neck shield and a dark spot on the back shield.
