Black yellow wasp with a vertical anchor-shaped marking on its yellow face. On its yellow rear, black rings with a linear colour separation towards the head and a central extension on the other side. Almost always these small black dots are connected with the black rings. Lives in colonies in a yellow coloured nest that is built in a dark place often below the surface. The larvae are fed with insects. In autumn the colony is abandoned and the workers search for nectar from flowers and ripe fruit. ⇔ l. 15-27 mm syn. Common wasp LA: ≈ The VESPULA GERMANICA (German wasp) is very similar but has 3 black dots on its face and the rear dots are often separate from the black. ≈ The DOLICHOVESPULA SYLVESTRIS (Tree wasp) has hardly any dots and the rings are straighter.
