Black yellow wasp with 3 black dots on its yellow face. On its yellow rear, are black rings with a linear colour separation towards the head and a central extension on the other side. Close to these extensions are small black dots that rarely touch the rings. Lives in colonies, grey coloured nests built in dark places, often below the surface. Larvae are fed with insects such as aphids or caterpillars. Leaves the colony by the end of summer to feed, like the adults, on nectar or sweet things such as ripe fruit. ⇔ l. 15-27 mm LA: ≈ Very similar to the VESPULA VULGARIS (common wasp) which has an anchor-shaped marking on its face and the rear dots are attached to the black rings. ≈ The rear black rings of the DOLICHOVESPULA SYLVESTRIS (Tree wasp) are straighter with hardly any dots.
