Top surface yellow-orange with black markings. Along the wing edges blue markings with black edges. Underside rear wing brown, front orange-brown. Stripes on the upper surface are visible underneath. ⇔ wsp. 40-50 mm LA: ≈ Resembles the NYMPHALIS POLYCHLOROS (Large tortoiseshell), which is larger and is missing the blue markings on the front wing. Paler and rarer.
