Large dark blue-green damselfly with wide wings. The ♂ wings with many veins are metal shiny green-blueish without wing marking. At the bottom rear end a dark red "tail light". The ♀ has green to brown translucent wings with green front veins and a small white marking ((Pterostigma). Young can have brown-orange wings that, when on each other lose the translucency until they get their final colours. It prefers shadow rich banks with some water flow in woodland, farmland settings. ⇔ l. 45-49 mm The presence of the wing marking and the colour of veins is a good indication of the gender. Wing veins green is ♀ and blue is ♂. There are many subspecies with a different colouring of body and wings. LA: ≈ Very similar to the CALOPTERYX SPLENDENS (Banded demoiselle) that has the wing base and tips translucent. ≈ The MNAIS COSTALIS has orange wings like the young Beautiful demoiselle but with a translucent base and is only present in East Asia.
