Very long slender black red wasp. The rear body is extremely thin behind the breast with a club-shaped tail. Completely black with an orange-red centre. The ♀ digs a nest chamber in the sand, in which a paralysed caterpillar is deposited with 1 egg laid on it. The chamber is closed afterwards. ♀ are larger than the ♂. ⇔ l. 16-28 mm LA: There are many similar wasps, this is the largest insect group and the details are very small. ≈ The HOPLAMMOPHILA ARMATA is 35 mm, has less orange and with a clear black spot on the bottom and the jaw is different, which is very difficult to see in the field. See photo LA. ≈ The SPHEX FUNERARIUS (Golden digger wasp) looks somewhat plumper and has a white face, ♀ has red-black legs.
