Small dark blue to violet or greenish blue shiny beetle. The rear body below the shield is orange only visible when flying or when the ♀ has lots of eggs pushing the shield upwards. Prefers alder, both larvae and adult eat the alder leaves. Larvae develop and hibernate below the surface. ⇔ l. 6-7 mm syn. CHRYSOMELA ALNI LA: ≈ The blue specimen of CHRYSOLINA VARIANS is a little rounder in shape.
