A wader with dark marked back and head. A dark breast marking, white belly and wing under surface with orange legs. The beak is orange with a tiny white moustache. In summer plumage it is red-brown with black markings and in autumn it becomes greyer. Flips rocks and shells on the beach to find food. ⇔ l. 22-24 cm A migratory bird breeding north and wintering far south. LA: ≈ The ACTITIS HYPOLEUCOS (Common sandpiper) is lighter in colour and with grey legs.
