A small orange-brown goose. The front of the wing is white and the rear edge is black. A lighter orange-yellow head and a black tail. The ♂ in breeding plumage has a dark collar and the beak is black. The ♀ head is lighter in colour. Breeds in burrows that can be in the ground, in trees or between buildings. ⇔ l. 60-70 cm Found in East Europe, Spain, Asia and Africa. Often kept as ornamental birds and escaped Ruddy shelducks can be seen in western Europe as well. LA: ≈ The TADORNA TADORNA (Shelduck) is the same size but shows whiter with a black head. ≈ The ALOPOCHEN AEGYPTIACA (Egyptian goose) is more colourful with a browner back and a lighter coloured head.
