Small dark skimmer with a white face and light markings on its rear, the markings can be yellow to red. The ♂ is red marked on the upper body with yellow to red markings in the centre. When older they become red-brown. The ♀ appears lighter coloured as it is yellow marked (not red), young ♂ still look like ♀. Prefers small pools, but can be seen further from the water. ⇔ l. 33-38 mm LA: ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA CAUDALIS (Lilypad whiteface) has white cerci (rear end extrusions). ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA PECTORALIS (Large white-faced darter) has wider markings on its rear of which the last one is always bright yellow. ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA RUBICUNDA (Ruby whiteface) has more markings on its rear.
