A darter with an orange-yellow marking at the wing base and black yellow banded legs. The rear body of the ♀ is yellow with dark vertical stripes on the sides. With age, the yellow becomes darker and the under surface greyish. The rear section of the ♂ has a red upper surface and black under surface. Young ♂ are as yellow as the ♀. The yellow marking can differ in size and can be on the rear and or the front wing base. Prefers still water with varying water levels. ⇔ l. 32-37 mm LA: ≈ The SYMPETRUM SANGUINEUM (Ruddy darter) also has a yellow wing base but the marking is much smaller.
