A darter with brown breast and eyes, the ♂ has a red rear section and the ♀ a yellow-brown rear section. The black legs, small yellow marking at the wing base and the club-shaped rear section are distinctive for the ♂. It prefers still water with lots of vegetation. ⇔ l. 35-40 mm LA: ≈ The SYMPETRUM STRIOLATUM (Große Heidelibelle) and SYMPETRUM VULGATUM (Gemeine Heidelibelle) have striped legs. ≈ The SYMPETRUM FLAVEOLUM (Gefleckte Heidelibelle) is paler red and the yellow wing base is larger.
