Large fly with a yellow face, black breast, blue-greenish shiny broad rear wings. Prefers colder areas and lives off nectar. The larvae feed on carrion. ⇔ l. 8-15 mm Lays its eggs in carrion which makes it useful in forensic science. LA: ≈ The MESEMBRINA MERIDIANA (Noon fly) is smaller and the wings have a yellow base.
