Long slender body with 3 very long tail threads (cerci), large eyes and sturdy antennae. The body is pale yellow with dark bands. The translucent wings are wide with dark veins.

The ♂ fly in large swarms close to clear water, waiting for passing ♀. Once adult they no longer feed.

⇔ l. 15-25 mm

Larvae develop in the water over 2 years. They then become semi-adult, resembling an adult but paler, dull wings and not yet fertile. Once adult their life is short, ♂ dies immediately after mating, the ♀ drops her eggs into the water and dies shortly after.

There are many EPHEMERIDAE (Mayfly) species, all with the same appearance: a thin body, large wings, long cerci and large eyes.
