Orange upper surface with dark markings in thin lines and a bright white ragged edge. The under surface is white with a dark pattern and orange dots and bands surrounded by black. In the orange band are black dots. Prefers warmer climates such as Spain, south of France and northern Africa. ⇔ wsp. 26-36 mm syn. Provençal fritillary LA: The Fritillary are all very similar and can be separated only by pattern and colours. ≈ The MELITAEA CINXIA (Glanville fritillary) is lighter with black dots on the rear wing. ≈ The MELITAEA ATHALIA (Heath fritillary) has darker markings especially close to the body.
