Large black bee with shiny blue-purple wings. Resembles a large bumblebee due to its dark colour. The ♂ has some small red rings at the end of its antennae. Lives solitary, the ♀ digs tunnels in soft dead wood to lay eggs. The ♀ can sting but only does so when threatened. In spring it likes to be around wisteria. ⇔ l. 20-25 mm LA: The XYLOCOPA genus has several similar members but in Europe, this one is the most common.
