Red-brown body, black head and neck, yellow beak and front head, white beak base, bottom wings are yellowish white and it has long toes. The young have a white eyebrow and cheek. The ♀ is twice the size of the ♂. Walks on water plants thanks to the wide long toes. Polyandric, meaning in the ♀ territory there can be 1-4 ♂. The ♂ builds the nest and tends to the chicks. ♀ helps to defend the nest and sometimes tends to the chicks as well. ⇔ l. 20-24 cm syn. Jesus birds, Lily trotters
