Large dark butterfly, ♂ dark brown top with a small eye on the front wing. ♀ has a brown top with slightly lighter track and a clear eye on the front wing. The underside is marked brown and the front wing has a large eye, with 2 small white spots next to it. The rear wing has a light track and for ♀ it is orange. 

As soon as the butterfly lands the wings are closed and the dark top is no longer visible. 

The caterpillar is beige-brown with brown longitudinal stripes.

Especially on rocky terrain, the caterpillars eat different types of grasses. Occurs in Spain, Portugal, southern France, Italy to Pakistan.
