Dark brown salamander with warted skin, white speckled cheeks, yellow black marked belly with a blue-grey tail and flanks. The ♂ develops a crest on its back and tail while in the water period. The ♀ is somewhat larger. Chooses deeper water with vegetation. After breeding it returns to the land stage up to hibernation, mostly below rocks or vegetation, sometimes with others. ⇔ l. 15-18 cm of which almost half is tail. syn. Great crested newt, warty newt Largest water salamander of Europe.
