Small newt with a dark blue back, orange belly, speckled flanks and a tail crest. In mating season the ♂ becomes bright blue with a full crest. The back of the ♀ turns a marbled blue-grey. Lives in the water in mating season to return to land afterwards. The colours fade and the skin dries. It winters in the mud. ⇔ l. 9-12 cm of which almost half is tail. syn. TRITURUS ALPESTRIS, MESOTRITON ALPESTRIS
