Black eye mask and forehead, grey cap and back, black wings with white markings (speculum). White belly becoming pinkish on flanks and towards the rump. Both sexes same but the ♀ is paler. Likes high lookout points for spotting prey, mostly grasshoppers and beetles. ⇔ l. 19-20 cm A migratory bird breeding in East Europe and Asia and wintering in Africa. LA: ≈ The LANIUS EXCUBITOR (Great Grey shrike) has the mask only covering the eyes. ≈ The ♂ LANIUS COLLURIO (Red-backed shrike) has a lighter grey coloured head and brownish wings.
