A sturdy marmot with short legs, small ears and a short black-tipped tail. The rough fur is grey to brown with lighter markings, flanks and belly are yellowish and white markings on the cheeks. Lives in colonies in burrows with a central nursing room and multiple escape routes. Likes to sunbathe, feeds in groups and whistles when alarmed. ⇔ hbl. 50-55 cm, tl. 15-20 cm Hibernates in groups, exploiting the warmth of its companions.
