Long black-brown body with short legs, flat head and a long pointed tail. The belly and throat are lighter in colour. Large rear legs with webbing between the toes. A very able swimmer catching its prey in, on or next to the water. Its burrow has a submerged entrance on a vegetation-free bank. ⇔ hbl. 60-90 cm, tl. 30-45 cm syn. European otter, Eurasian river otter, Old World otter It is easy to recognise but seldom seen. LA: ≈ De MUSTELA LUTREOLA (Russian mink) is much smaller with a striking white beak.
