A large deer, in summer red-brown with white markings and a central black line from the lower back towards the tail, a light belly and breast. In winter more even grey-brown with faded markings. The ♂ has palmate antlers (with plates between the branches), the antlers are shed every year and immediately grow back. Gathers in same-sex groups until the mating season (in autumn) when the groups mix. In spring the sexes separate again. The ♀ sometimes chooses multiple mating partners. ⇔ hbl. 130-170 cm, sh. 85-110 cm, tl. 16-19 cm syn. CERVUS DAMA Already extinct in the middle ages in Europe, they were reintroduced in parks. Escaped deer from parks have re-established a wild population.
