A large duck with a spoon-shaped beak. The wing has a blue leading edge, white band and green rear edge. The tips are grey-brown and the under surface is white. The ♂ in breeding plumage has a grey-black head, white breast, red-brown belly and flanks and a black back and tail with a white sideband. The ♀ is brown marked with brown beige flanks and a white rump, a grey beak with an orange base. The large spoonbill is used for sifting plankton, seeds and water life from the water. ⇔ l. 47-48 cm Mainly a migratory bird and rare, even at its breeding grounds. Groups of ducks in winter normally have only a few shovelers among them.
