A gull with a grey cloak, a dark grey wing base becoming lighter to the outside edge, with a black wing tip. Black eyes, yellow beak and black webbed feet. The rear toe is very small and has no claw as other gulls. In summer plumage a white head, in winter plumage grey marks behind the eyes and on the neck. The young have a black zigzag marking on the wings and a black beak. Lives mostly on open seas but breeds on cliffs in huge colonies. ⇔ l. 37–41 cm A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The LARUS CANUS (Gull) has white markings on the black wing tips and light coloured legs. ≈ The CHROICOCEPHALUS RIDIBUNDUS (Black-headed gull) has red legs and a red beak.
