A round grebe with a high forehead, the beak a little upward and red eyes. In summer completely black with bright yellow eye feathers and red-brown flanks. In winter neck, throat, breast, belly and flanks become white, the head remains black. Lives in colonies sometimes together with gulls. Swims and dives with the young on its back. ⇔ l. 30-35 cm A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The PODICEPS AURITUS (Horned grebe) has a lower forehead and has golden tufts on its head in summer. In winter the white starts right below the eye.
