A robust dark brown duck, the ♂ always with red beak and the ♀ with a dark beak. In summer plumage the ♂ gets an orange red head and a large forehead, black breast with white flanks. The ♀ and winter plumage of the ♂ has a grey-brown body with silver grey cheeks and a brown cap. The wings upper surface is brown with a broad white rear edge, the under surface is lighter in colour. Feeds on water plants by diving or from the surface. ⇔ l. 53-57 cm Partly migratory.
