Duck with a dark head, a long flat beak with a long tuft on its head and neck. The ♂ has a green-black head, white neck, brown breast, grey flanks and white black marked wings and back. The ♀ has a brown head and neck, grey-brown back, dark grey wings with a white speculum (side feathers) and light grey tips, under surface is white. Lives close to the coast and eat mainly fish. Nests are on the surface. ⇔ l. 51-62 cm Partly migratory. LA: ≈ The MERGUS MERGANSER (Common merganser) ♀ has a white neck and the chin marking is more defined.The ♂ has a white breast.
