Grey to red-brown, belly lighter. Conspicuous white black stripes on the flanks. Black tail with brown edges and lighter eye edges. Prefers deciduous woodland on the surface, however, is an excellent climber. Gathers nuts in the cheek pockets and hides the food for winter. Sometimes eats insects. Hibernation is interrupted for feeding. ⇔ hbl. 13-19 cm, tl. 7-11 cm
