A rust red cap and neck, black back and a white-yellowish belly. The eye mask is black and sometimes marked. The ♀ is same but a little paler. A black tail, white rump, the black wings have white markings. Young are marked with a pale white breast and brown-grey back. Looking for warmth and likes to sit on a high branch or wire in the sunshine on the lookout for prey, mostly insects. ⇔ l. 17-19 cm A migratory bird breeding in southern Europe and Asia and wintering in Africa. LA: ≈ The LANIUS COLLURIO (Red-backed shrike) is just as large but with a grey head.
