A small falcon with a large head. The ♂ is dark grey with red rump and legs, the beak and eye outline are orange. The ♀ has a light brown head with black eye markings, a grey back, yellow belly and a black white striped tail. Young birds have a striped belly and dark back and like the female a mask with a striped tail. It feeds on insects spotted while hovering over the area. ⇔ l. 28-34 cm A migratory bird breeding in East Europe and Asia and wintering in southern Africa.
