Brown marked bird with lighter coloured breast, the belly is unmarked. Legs and beak are lighter in colour, dark eyes with a light edge and there is a faint lighter line from the beak. Both sexes are similar but the female is a little smaller. It prefers damp open areas with spreading trees. ⇔ l. 17-18 cm Mostly a resident bird, the most northerly individuals fly south in winter. LA: ≈ This is the largest of the family EMBERIZIDAE (Buntings). ≈ The ALAUDA ARVENSIS (Skylark) is slimmer.
