While breeding the ♂ has a bright red-orange head like a helmet with a black forehead and face, an orange back, wings are brownish, the belly is black. Outside breeding male and female are brown marked with a lighter belly and very discreet. Weaver from southern Africa has a circular nest in the reed. Breeds in colonies and feeds in groups. The male builds several nests for several females and impresses with his flight ability during courting. ⇔ l. 10-11 cm
