A sturdy round brown marked bird with a short bill. The wings are rust coloured, visible in flight. A brown back with dark dotted lines and a lighter belly. The ♂ has a grey eyebrow, throat and breast. Well hidden in bushes and grasses searching for seeds and bugs, the ♂ can be heard clearly at dusk. ⇔ l. 22-25 cm syn. Corncrake, Landrail A migratory bird that often migrates with quails, wintering in Africa. LA: ≈ The COTURNIX COTURNIX (Quail) is smaller and more yellow-brown coloured with shorter legs.
