Round plover with long legs and a short bill, a white band on the breast, a white eyebrow, and a V-shaped marking on the neck. The back, wings and breast is dark brown and the legs grey-green. In summer, colours are red-orange breast with a black belly and white rump. The ♀ is brighter coloured than the ♂. In winter the breast is more orange-yellow and the belly is white. The ♀ takes the courting initiative and mates with several ♂ and he hatches the eggs. ⇔ l. 20-21 cm syn. EUDROMIAS MORINELLUS Migratory bird wintering in Africa. LA: ≈ The PLUVIALIS APRICARIA (Golden plover) is more colourful on the back and in winter the eyebrow is less noticeable.
