Dark round head with a high crest, short bill, white neck and yellow eyes. The dark wings are white marked, visible when flying. The ♂ has a dark green head with white cheeks, its back is black with a long tail, white flanks and breast. The ♀ has a brown head, grey back and flanks and a white breast. Dives for shellfish, small water life and insect larvae. ⇔ l. 40–52 cm LA: ≈ The AYTHYA FULIGULA (Tufted duck) ♂ has a thinner head with a long tuft, ♀ is more plain brown. ≈ The AYTHYA MARILA (Greater scaup) and AYTHYA FERINA (Pochard) ♂ have a grey back.
