Large diving duck with light grey beak with a black tip and yellow eyes. The ♂ has a green head, black breast, light grey back and white flanks. The ♀ is brown with a darker head, breast and tail and a lighter coloured back and flanks. The ♀ also has a white beak base. Lives in large groups on high seas as well as in smaller groups with Tufted ducks and Goldeneyes in still waters. It searches for shells and smaller water creatures below the surface and sometimes it eats seeds. ⇔ l. 39–56 cm syn. Bluebill, Scaup A migratory bird breeding in north Europe to Siberia and wintering in central Europe. LA: ≈ The AYTHYA FULIGULA (Tufted duck) and BUCEPHALA CLANGULA (Goldeneye) have a black back. ≈ The AYTHYA FERINA (Pochard) has a rust red head and red eye.
