The upper surface is brown with an eye marking on the front wing. The ♂ has a circle like marking and darker scent stripes. The ♀ has a large orange marking on the front wing with sharp-edged black eye spots with 1 or 2 centres. The under surface rear wing is grey-brown sometimes with dark markings. The front wing is similar top and bottom surfaces. ⇔ wsp. 40-48 mm LA: ≈ The PYRONIA TITHONUS (Gatekeeper) is smaller and with more orange.
