Large grey-brown moth with dark lines on the front wing. The rear wings are bright red with 2 black bands. 

Mostly sitting with the front wings closed on a branch or below bark practically invisible. Prefers deciduous wood. Active at night visiting flowers and fallen fruit and are not always attracted by light sources.

LA:
There are several subspecies with black red rear wings that are difficult to tell apart. 
≈ The CATOCALA ELECTA (Rosy underwing) is little pinker.
≈ And the CATOCALA ELOCATA (French red underwing)  has clearer black bands.
