A white golden Y shape on the front wings which are grey-brown marked, sometimes a little purple in colour and can be very variable. The rear wings are yellow-brown striped with a darker rear edge. On the head a large crest with two smaller crests just behind. Mostly found sitting with the wings folded like a tent, on flowers the wings can be open to fleeing fast. ⇔ wsp. 35-40 mm A migratory butterfly wintering in south Europe. The eggs and pupae winter in central Europe provided it is a mild winter.
