Small agile songbird of forests with a thin yellow crest. Pale greenback and lighter grey-green belly, green wings with black stripes and markings. Large dark eyes with a white edge and a small black moustache. The ♀ has black along the yellow crest whereas the ♂ has a yellow-orange crest with black alongside that can be raised to impress. Found near pine forests or parks looking for insects, is not threatened easily. ⇔ l. 8-9 cm Smallest bird of Europe. The singing is rhythmic with many repeats, very high a tone so some people cannot hear it. Partly migratory bird. The national bird of Luxembourg. LA: ≈ The REGULUS IGNICAPILLA (Firecrest) has more colours, no eye ring but an eye stripe.
